John Edwards (b. June 10, 1953) launched his political career with great hopes for the future, hopes that included the presidency. He earned his law degree in 1977 and worked as a trial attorney, where he made much of his fortune. He served as a United States Senator from North Carolina from 1999 to 2005. He primarily focused on social issues like health care, education and the protection of civil liberties. In 2004, he tried for the Democratic presidential nomination and lost to John Kerry, who then chose Edwards as his running mate. They lost that election to George W. Bush. In 2008, Edwards tried again for the presidential nomination. He lost to Barack Obama. It was Edwards mishandling of campaign finances during that time that eventually led to his complete and very public undoing. Charged with campaign finance violations and conspiracy, he was brought to trial in May of 2012. He was found not guilty for several counts; others were dismissed due to mistrial. Still, his fall from grace was hard. Around the time he announced his intention to run for the presidency in 2008, Edwards lived in this four-bedroom Georgetown house, located at 3327 P Street NW, with his wife, Elizabeth, now deceased.
