Washington, DC

Elizabeth Dole (b. July 29, 1936) has been on the national political stage since the mid-seventies. Starting out as a commissioner for the Federal Trade Commissioner (FTC), she was known as a passionate supporter of consumer rights and equal opportunity for the underserved. Her greatest roles have included: secretary of transportation, where she was the first American woman to hold the position; secretary of labor, where she increased minimum wage and fought for equal opportunity; and president of the American Red Cross. Over the years, Elizabeth put her political career on hold several times to support her husband, Bob, whom she married in 1975, as he campaigned nationally as Gerald Ford's running mate. During the first year of their marriage, the two moved into the south tower of The Watergate complex. They still live in that same first-floor apartment today.
