Daniel Moynihan (b. March 16, 1927; d. March 26, 2003) was a sociologist, academic, public servant and politician who spent much of his childhood in New York City. Moynihan grew up in a family that had little and in a neighborhood that required street smarts. As such, he dedicated himself to issues of poverty and urban affairs throughout his life. His most memorable role was that of New York senator from 1977 to 2001. Before he began his long tenure in the Senate, Moynihan had joined the Navy and fought in World War II, held important positions in four presidential administrations (Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford) and became the US ambassador to the United Nations. Soon after starting his first term as senator, Moynihan bought a condo located here, at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in DC’s Penn Quarter neighborhood.
