Bob Dole (b. July 22, 1923) is an attorney and former United States Senator, serving from 1969 to 1996. As a politician on the national stage, he also had several “almost” moments: he was Gerald Ford’s Vice Presidential running mate in 1976 and was the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in the 1996 election. Dole co-chaired a commission to investigate issues at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2007. Dole was badly injured while serving in WWII and was left with a paralyzed right arm. After retiring from public office, Dole continued to work as an attorney in DC. Beginning shortly after his marriage to Elizabeth in 1975 and for almost the entirety of his political career, Dole lived in this first-floor apartment at The Watergate’s south tower. Other DC notables, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Monica Lewinsky, have come and gone over the years, but Dole has been a mainstay at this iconic complex. He and his wife Elizabeth still live here today.
