3133 Connecticut Ave NW
Washington, DC
Lyndon B. Johnson (b. August 27, 1908; d. January 22, 1973) was the 37th Vice President of the United States. He became the 36th President of the United States after the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. Johnson’s early efforts were focused on seeing through President Kennedy’s initiatives at the time of his death. They included a civil rights bill and tax cuts. Johnson, however, became better known for his hopes for a great American society. To that end, he passed sweeping legislation, dealing with issues including Medicare, beautification, poverty, crime, education and urban renewal, in what he called The Great Society program. Before his time in office, Johnson lived in upper NW DC in this apartment building, The Kennedy-Warren, located at 3133 Connecticut Avenue NW. Completed in 1931, The Kennedy-Warren is an Art-Deco relic that was also once home to Harry S. Truman.
