Paul Mellon (b. June 11, 1907; d. February 1, 1999) was an American philanthropist and heir to the multi-million dollar Mellon Bank fortune. Mellon had an avid interest in art and thoroughbred horses. His vast fortune helped build the East and West wings of the Natural Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and contributed to new buildings at his alma maters The Choate School in Connecticut, Yale University and Clare College in Cambridge. Mellon was also a successful horse owner and breeder. His horse Sea Hero won the Kentucky Derby in 1993. For more than 60 years, Mellon lived in this historic Georgian brick mansion home, located at 3055 Whitehaven Street NW. It was here that he housed a portion of the legendary Mellon art collection.
