Donald H. Rumsfeld (b. July 9, 1932) was both the oldest person to serve as U.S. Defense Secretary and the youngest. He was named to the post in 1975 by President Gerald Ford when he was 43 and then again by president George W. Bush in 2001 at age 69. Rumsfeld's career has placed him in many top level public and private sector jobs. Over the years, he also served as U.S. Ambassador to NATO (1973-1974) and as CEO and chairman of the pharmaceutical company G.D. Searle & Co. (1977 to 1985), where he pushed through the legalization of the artificial sweetener aspartame. For his dedication to public service, Rumsfeld received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.  Though mostly retired from public life, Rumsfeld continues to live at this house near Embassy Row in Washington DC's Kalorama neighborhood.
